What to Wear for Your Photography Session

One of the most common questions I get before a session is, “What should we wear?”

My biggest piece of advice is to keep it simple. I love soft, neutral colors and clothing that feels natural and timeless. Cream, ivory, beige, soft gray, muted blue, dusty rose, sage, and other subtle tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family and your connection with one another.

Think About Your Home

Something else to consider is where your photographs will eventually live.

These images are going to be displayed on the walls of your home, so think about the colors and overall aesthetic of your space when choosing what to wear. If your home is light, neutral, and airy, softer colors will blend beautifully. If your home has warmer, richer tones, you may want to incorporate those shades into your clothing as well.

Your photographs should feel like they belong in your home.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

You don’t need everyone wearing the exact same color. In fact, I prefer when families coordinate rather than perfectly match.

Choose a soft color palette with a few complementary shades and build everyone’s outfits around it. Mixing subtle textures can also add interest without making the photographs feel busy.

Try to avoid large logos, bold graphics, neon colors, and very distracting patterns. These can quickly pull attention away from the people in the photograph.

Comfort Matters

Above all, choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing. If you’re constantly adjusting an outfit or worried about how it looks, it can be difficult to relax in front of the camera.

For maternity sessions, I especially love soft, flowing dresses and simple silhouettes that highlight your belly without feeling overly styled.

For newborn sessions at home, comfort is even more important. Soft neutrals, bare feet, cozy fabrics, and simple clothing work beautifully with the relaxed feel of an in-home newborn session.

Keep It Timeless

Trends come and go, but these photographs will be part of your family for years.

Simple clothing, soft colors, and natural textures help create photographs that won’t feel dated a few years from now. The goal isn’t for your outfits to be the first thing you notice. It’s for you to notice your baby’s tiny features, the way your children looked at this age, and the connection between your family.

When in doubt, keep it simple.
